As The City of Vancouver has initiatives such as ‘Greenest City 2020’ and ‘Transportation 2040’ plans where cycling is a component to the citys future, analysing how biking is involved is important. The installation of separated bikeways in downtown Vancouver have had a variety of opinions surrounding the project, so it is important to analyse different aspects of this projects successes and drawbacks. This project is an opportunity to look at the effect these bikeways have had on cyclist safety.

Separated bikeways have been installed over the Burrard Street Bridge, Hornby Street, Dunsmuir Street and the Dunsmuir Viaduct through 2010. By analysing the rate of accidents with cars and the locations of accidents we can analyse trends in cycling accidents. This study can be utilized to gain perspective on future improvements of the project by highlighting areas where traffic pattern reconfigurations may need to be considered, or as a guide to where further separated lanes could be placed.
